Bar Mitzvah in Israel
on the top of masada
Dear Parents,
We welcome you to an opportunity to celebrate an historic Bar MItzvah in Israel on the mountain of Masada, in a manner that your and your son will never forget.
The Dead Sea Chabad House places at your disposal the myriad resources available to make this experience a significant and joyful occasion for the entire family.
A Description of the Ceremony
Masada is a symbol in israel of the heroism and devotion of the Jewish people who fought for their values, history and freedom.
Inspired by the location and archaeological findings of the site, we perform the Bar Mitzvah ceremony in the ancient synagogue discovered within the mountain fortress of Masada, on Mondays, Thursdays and on Rosh Chodesh, the first day of each Hebrew month.
The ceremony begins with the commencement of the morning service (Shacharit) in which each Jewish man age 13 and above adorns himself with his Tallit (prayer shawl) and Tefillin (phylacteries).
When the congregants arrive at the point in the service at which the Torah portion is read, the head of the family is honored with the opening of the Ark, and the Bar Mitzvah Boy leads the Torah scroll to the center of the synagogue.
The Bar Mitzvah boy is called up to the Torah for the reading of the third passage (pasuk), following which he is showered with flying candies. The congregation breaks out in joyous song and dance, as the Bar Mitzvah boy is raised up on to the shoulders of the men.
Before the end of the ceremony we are holding "a surprise showing."
The service concludes with speeches delivered by the Bar Mitzvah Boy and by the Rabbi of Masada, Rabbi Shimon Elharar, who blesses the celebrants and awards a special certificate to the Bar Mitzvah Boy.
Recently, every day is a scribe to Mount Masada writes the Torah of the ancient synagogue in Masada. After the ceremony we will give a rare opportunity to write a letter to the bar mitzvah of the Torah side!. For more information press here
Many Different Ways to Celebrate
There are many different ways in which the above celebration may be modified to meet the unique needs of the individual family.
On numerous occasions in which the Bar Mitzvah Boy is not used to a lengthy service, for example, the family or group has the option of limiting the ceremony to a simple "laying of Tefillin" or "Reading from the Torah."
In such cases, the prayers are much shorter and include only the main prayers, with a number of selected parts sung to traditional and recognized melodies. During the prayers, the celebrants will also recite the "Shema Yisrael."
